The salty breeze is in the air, the waves are calling, and the August Bank Holiday is just around the corner. There is something truly magical about taking your children to the seaside. Whether you are building sandcastles, hunting for hidden treasures, or dipping toes into the refreshing water, the beach is the perfect classroom for curiosity and wonder.
As we head out for some coastal fun, let’s make sure we leave the beach exactly as we found it, ensuring these beautiful spaces stay safe and welcoming for the creatures that call them home and for the next families who visit.
What Can We Spot Today?
The beach is brimming with life if you know where to look. Encourage your children to become nature detectives. Can you spot:
- Sea Glass: These smooth, frosted gems are pieces of glass smoothed by the waves over many years. They are like treasure found in the sand.
- Shells of All Shapes: From spiralled whelk shells to tiny, delicate clam shells, it is fascinating to look at the different colours and patterns.
- Crabs Scuttling By: If you are lucky, you might spot a small crab darting between the rocks at low tide. Remember, we are just visitors in their home, so it is best to watch them quietly from a distance.
- Interesting Driftwood: Look for unique shapes washed up by the tide. These make wonderful natural toys for imaginative play.
Making a Splash: Water Safety First
Nothing beats the thrill of the ocean, but the sea commands respect. To ensure your beach day is filled with happy memories, water safety must always be the number one priority.
The ocean is powerful and can change in an instant. When your child is anywhere near or in the water, never, ever take your eyes off them. Even in the shallowest waves, supervision needs to be constant and undivided. Put your phone away, stay close, and be ready to help.
To keep them safe on the water:
- Never let children use lilos or inflatable toys in the sea. These are designed for pools and can be easily swept out by currents or winds, putting your child at serious risk.
- If they are using a paddleboard, an adult must be with them on the board or right beside them in the water.
- Crucially, always ensure your child wears a correctly fitted life vest or buoyancy aid when they are on the water (paddleboarding, kayaking, etc.) or participating in activities in deeper water.
Being Guardians of the Coast
Part of our adventure is learning how to care for our big, beautiful world. We love to turn a trip to the beach into a mission to keep it clean. It is a wonderful way to show our children that every action, no matter how small, helps protect our oceans and wildlife.
