Spring is the time when many birds start to nest, some birds return to the same place each year whilst others look to find a new, safe place to build their nests and raise their chicks.
There are lots of ways we can help our garden birds through the nesting season so read on to find out more about what you and your family can do together to create a safe environment for nesting birds this spring.
Did you know birds nest are protected?
Birds and their nests are very important and the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) offers legal protection to wild birds’ nests , Under the law they’re protected from intentional damage, destruction or removal when they are in use or being built. Our bird population in the UK is dwindling due to habitat loss, food scarcity and climate change and they need our help more than ever to survive.
By learning how to help birds during nesting season, we can encourage their populations to grow and thrive.
We’ve popped some ideas below because the little things you can do make a big difference.
Help Gather Materials For Their Nest
By leaving twigs and small branches, leaves, moss and even bits of twine out in the garden, birds will collect this material to build safe and cosy nests.
It is recommended to not leave out pet fur and hair as new studies show that chemicals in treatments and other pet care have shown harmful to birds, their nests and the survival of their chicks and fledglings.
Sow and Grow Bird-Friendly Plants
Planting a mix of native trees, hedges and shrubs can help birds find nesting spots and shelter, but that’s not all they do, shrubs like holly and other berry bearing plants, provide food for birds in the Winter. You can also plant flowers that birds will love to eat like sunflowers, teasel and echinacea.
Create a bird feeding station
Nesting is a tiring time for birds and they need all the energy they can before, during and after nesting. Leaving them food in bird feeders situated away from fences, walls and trees will provide them with a safe place to gather food. Bird baths or bowls will also help birds bathe.

Good To Know: Avoid cutting hedges during nesting season
The RSPB advise against cutting back hedges between March to August as it is a key time for nesting birds. So if you do cut your hedges back, make sure it is during the autumn to winter seasons, and always check there aren’t any active nests in use.
